Carl Griffith's 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter
Two loaves were baked at the same time. One was slashed and the other was not. These loaves were relatively far along in the rise, and there was not much oven push available. It is believed that slashing any later in the rise would cause unrecoverable loss of volume.
